We’re living, at the moment, in a house that’s partly off-grid. We are hooked up to municipal electricity, but the water we use all comes from the rain.
Our rainwater collection system works well, for the most part, but this season, the rains have been quite scarce. I find myself checking our water tank daily, sinking my tape measure down into the cistern to see how much volume the latest drizzle has brought in.
In August, things looked bleak. The tank was less than half full, and the bulk of the rainy season was already behind us. Occasional rains would yield an inch of increase, and I’d think: it’s not enough. We were still so far from our goal.
But here we are in October, finding that those inches added up. We’ve still got a ways to go, but we have enough water now to last us a long while, if we use it wisely. That incremental progress—which once felt insufficient—has taken us a long way.
The same can be true in bee world. Things are tough for bees right now, and there’s so much we need to change. But if the water tank teaches us anything, it’s that small steps can make a big impact.
Our work, at WeKeep, is to help you find and take those steps. Our goals might be lofty (systems change is a big deal, after all), but the work we do in the day-to-day? It’s just an inch of water. It isn’t the whole tank.
Interested in learning more about the steps you can take to build towards the change our bees dearly need?
