MEET OUR TEAM
Maggie Shanahan, PhD
Co-founder
Maggie is a beekeeper, researcher, educator, and author of Building Resilient Beekeeping Systems: Actionable Insights from Chiapas, Mexico. She has spent nearly fifteen years living and working between the U.S. and Mexico, keeping – and being kept by – honey bees. Maggie holds a doctorate in Entomology from the University of Minnesota where she studied the impacts of industrial agriculture on honey bee health. Maggie’s recent work proposes a systems approach to honey bee health, and identifies collective strategies to build resilient beekeeping systems. Alongside her bee work, Maggie enjoys hiking, crafting, circle singing, and a good game of charades.
Héctor Morales Urbina, MS Co-founder
Héctor is a second-generation Chiapa beekeeper, researcher, and agroecologist. He belongs to the beekeeping group “20 de noviembre” - an intergenerational collective that nurtures beekeeping in his hometown. Héctor’s master’s work examined the traditional ecological knowledge that beekeepers from this group implement as they navigate the myriad challenges that honey bees in Chiapas face today. Now a doctoral student with Mexico’s national agroecology program, Héctor studies strategies to facilitate beekeeper-beekeeper exchange to scale resilience-building practices. He also enjoys photography, farming, and spending time with family and friends.
Local knowledge, global reach
We have worked with beekeepers on five different continents operating at a variety of scales; the bulk of our experience is in the U.S. and Mexico.
We’re equipped to meet you where you are. The strategies we implement differ across contexts, but the principles that guide us are the same. We work with you to apply our systems framework to your local context to create a comprehensive plan tailored to the system in which you are situated.
Our offerings are available in both Spanish and English
